Pinelli worked as a printmaker, painter, sculptor and draughtsman. He studied under his father who was a sculptor. Bartolommeo also studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna and the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, though he pursued a more commercial life by selling his paintings and drawings to a foreign market. Pinelli associated himself with other artists who were working in this manner, such as Franz Kaisermann. Indeed Pinelli often painted the staffage in Kaisermann’s pictures. Pinelli worked with Felice Gianni, whom he assisted on the frescoes for the Palazzo di Spagna in Rome from 1806-07. Pinelli contributed to a number of editions of engravings, which reproduced local costumes and customs, titled Costumi Romanae, this was first published in 1809. Pinelli also contributed illustrations to a number of literary classics.
