De la Démocratie en Amérique by Alexis de Tocqueville [1809-1859] was first published in January 1835 in less than 500 copies and in 1840 two concluding volumes were published. In March 1835 de Tocqueville met Henry Reeve in Paris, became a lifelong friend and Reeve became the official translator of his work. de Tocqueville wrote to Henry Reeve in May 1840 “You have rendered my thoughts, in their most delicate shades, with a fidelity and clearness that seem to me perfect”. £4850 |
